Pricing & Markup
How you bill materials and labor on customer quotes.
How do you price your fences?
Set this up the way that's best for your business — you can change it per fence style anytime in Products. This sets the starting point for new styles.
Applies to new fence styles you create. Your existing styles keep their current setup.
The markup and labor settings below apply only to fence styles priced as costs + markup. Styles on your advertised rate ignore them.
Labor Billing Mode
Labor Rate (per labor hour)
$/labor-hour
What you charge the customer per labor hour. On each quote, enter total expected labor hours for the full job — we multiply by this rate.
⚠ Percentage-based labor markup is a crude approximation.
It works for standard jobs but systematically OVER-bills easy jobs (small, quick, no gates) and UNDER-bills complex ones (extra gates, slopes, tear-out, HOA restrictions, commercial access — these don't scale with material cost). If you do varied work, switch to Hourly mode above for accurate billing.
Labor Markup %
%
Stacks on top of total material cost (mathematically equivalent to a second material markup). Set to 0 if labor is already priced into your materials.
Material Markup %
%
Your profit margin on materials. Applied on top of the material costs from Products. Example: $1,000 in materials + 25% markup = $1,250 customer material charge. Does NOT apply to gates or tear-out (those are customer prices directly).
Gate Settings
Gate prices are set per product on the Products page. This setting controls how gate width affects fence footage on every quote.
💡 How gates affect fence length on your quotes
Unchecked (most contractors): a 4ft gate adds $285 on top of 100ft of fence. You bill for 100ft + the gate.
Checked (legacy): a 4ft gate shrinks the fence to 96ft and adds $285. You bill 96ft + the gate.
Switching this changes every future quote — set it to how your business actually works and leave it.
What Customers See
Everything here changes the quote your customer opens — nothing here changes your price.
3D Fence Previews
When a fence style has a matching 3D model, your customers can spin it around on their quote and you can preview it in the estimator. Turn this off if you'd rather not show 3D previews on your quotes.
Satellite Photo on Quotes
Off by default. When on, quotes also include the actual satellite view of the property with your fence lines drawn on it, right below the layout drawing — so the customer can see how the lines sit on their real lot. Leave it off if you only want the clean line drawing.
Detailed Fence Specifications
Ornamental iron/steel products with a Manufacturer & Grade picked always include that maker’s real spec card on the quote — no switch needed. This toggle (off by default) additionally prints the older generic per-style spec sheet for every other fence style (wood, vinyl, chain link — being redone category by category). Generic specs may not match your exact build or height — if so, leave this off and upload your own head-on photo per style in the fence-style textures section instead. Your 3D previews and uploaded photos show either way.
Bill of Materials on Estimates
On by default. When on, the Full Quote view, Print, and Download PDF include the complete parts list (every item + quantity, down to screws and brackets). Turn it off to keep your material takeoff out of what customers see — useful on competitive bids so your cut sheet can't be shopped to another company. Pricing totals still show either way, and your own parts lists inside the estimator sidebar are never affected.
When the list is on, you can still keep the small stuff off it — hardware and concrete stay on your work orders and order lists either way:
filtering the list above
Customer Hub
A branded portal where your customers follow their fence job — progress timeline, job photos, their property map, quote/invoice, and two-way messaging. The link is added automatically to your quote & final-invoice emails.
Turn this off if you don’t use work orders or the hub — your customers won’t receive hub links and the hub tools stay hidden in your account.
Emails & Notifications
What lands in your inbox when you send something to a customer.
Copy Me on Customer Emails
Off by default. When on, every quote, change order, final invoice, and payment receipt you send is also delivered to your business email (subject prefixed “Copy:”) — the exact same email your customer sees, so you have a per-job record in your own inbox and can confirm at a glance that it went out.

Sales Tax (Canada)
Fence installation is a service to real property. If you're registered for GST/HST, charge it on the full job. If you're a small supplier under $30,000/yr and not registered, leave this off. (Confirm your situation with your accountant.)
Province / Territory
Picking a province fills in the right tax line(s) — you can edit them. In BC & Manitoba you charge the customer GST only (provincial sales tax is paid on your materials, not added as a line). Saskatchewan & Quebec show two separate lines (GST + PST/QST).
GST/HST registration number
Required by the CRA on every invoice so your customer can claim their input tax credit. Find it on your CRA business account.
QST registration number
Quebec only — Revenu Québec requires your QST number on invoices alongside your GST number.
QuickBooks sales tax code
QuickBooks (Canada) requires a tax code on every estimate & invoice. We auto-match your rate, but if a sync fails with a “GST/HST rate” error, pick the matching code here. Refresh list

Customer Payments (Stripe Connect)
Connect your Stripe account so customers can pay quotes directly from their quote page. Money goes straight to your bank account.
Checking Stripe status...
Connect your Stripe account so customers can pay quotes from their quote page — money lands in the Stripe dashboard you already log into and pays out to your bank. Don’t have a Stripe account yet? You can create one during the connection. Stripe handles all payment processing and security — Visual Fence Pro never sees your banking details.
Google Calendar
Connect Google Calendar to auto-create events when you schedule work orders. Job details, customer info, and address are included in each event.
Checking Google Calendar status...
Calendar events only. Visual Fence Pro creates and updates your install events, and reads events already on your calendar so it can warn you about scheduling conflicts. It cannot access anything else in your Google account — no email, contacts, or files.

How Fence Style Photos Work
Upload a straight-on photo of your own build for any style and we'll keep it on your account, on any device.
Right now your quotes, PDFs and work orders show our standard spec panel for every style — a saved photo doesn't replace it yet. We're rolling that out; nothing you upload now is wasted, and it'll be there when it turns on.
For the best photo: shoot straight-on with even lighting, crop tightly to just the fence, and wider ratios (3:1 or 4:1) sit best on the page.
